Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling?
There are a few reasons your AC unit might not be cooling your home as it should. If this happens, you should first check your air filter. A clogged or dirty air filter is the most common and straightforward fix.
Since the air filter is responsible for keeping dirt and debris out of the air conditioner, if it is dirty or clogged, it can restrict airflow and cause the air conditioner to run but not cool.
If your air filter is clean, then it’s likely a more significant issue like one of the following:
- The air conditioner is not properly sized for the space it is trying to cool:
Air conditioners need to have a certain amount of airflow over their evaporator coils in order to work properly, and if they are too small for the space they are trying to cool, they will not be able to provide enough airflow. - There is insufficient airflow over the evaporator coils:
If there is not enough airflow, the coils will not be able to remove enough heat from the air, and the air conditioner will not be able to cool the space properly. - The refrigerant charge is low:
When the refrigerant charge is low, there is not enough coolant in the system to remove the heat from the air, and the air conditioner will not be able to cool the space properly. - The condenser coils are dirty or obstructed:
The condenser coils are responsible for dissipating heat, and if they are dirty or obstructed, they will not be able to do their job properly. As a result, the air conditioner will not be able to cool the space properly.
